Creating Functions

CREATE    [DEFINER = user | CURRENT_USER }]
    FUNCTION sp_name ([func_parameter[,...]])
    RETURNS Any valid MySQL data type
    [characteristic ...Valid SQL procedure statement

func_parameter:

param_name type

characteristic:

LANGUAGE SQL
  [NOTDETERMINISTIC
  CONTAINS SQL | NO SQL | READS SQL DATA | MODIFIES SQL DATA }
  | SQL SECURITY DEFINER | INVOKER }
  | COMMENT 'string'

By default, the function is associated with the default database.

To associate explicitly with a given database, specify the name as db_name.sp_name.

Any SELECT statement using the function simply needs to pass the correct parameters to the function.
